Introduction

VOLUNTEERING IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR TOWN

When asked, "What makes Greenwich Special?" The answer–Volunteers! Greenwich has a wealth of volunteers committed to making life in our town the best it can be. Volunteers are the "Heart and Soul" of our town. In this booklet, over 120 volunteer organizations are listed. This list does not include the schools and places of worship, where many people donate lots of time and talent.
Volunteering in Greenwich is not new. Our town was originally governed by the town meeting. All interested citizens gathered to make the decisions. Now we have the Representative Town Meeting and many boards and commissions, yet they are all made up of volunteers. Read about the history of many of the organizations currently serving our town, and discover that they have been helping for 20, 30, 50 or more than 100 years. Caring about our neighbors, sharing our time and our talents is our town’s strength and bond.
Recently, a newcomer to town asked me, "I like helping with children, where can I volunteer?"
That sparked the plan to design this booklet around interest groups. If you enjoy working with children, flowers, seniors, sports, politics or any number of interests, a volunteer group is eagerly waiting for your call.
Volunteers join organizations to give and soon discover they are receiving more than they ever imagined. There is a good feeling when you have helped others and made a positive difference in the community. Plus, volunteers learn new skills, gain new insights and make a ton of new friends. Newcomers who join volunteer groups readily feel at home in our town and join the insiders who know volunteering is a Greenwich way of life.

Volunteer organizations listed in this booklet have a Greenwich contact or a Greenwich location.

We have tried to limit the volunteer organizations listed to those having a Greenwich contact or a Greenwich location. We know we may have missed many worthy groups, and we look forward to adding more. Additionally contact information is always changing and we may not always keep up. Please send us a note or e-mail with any corrections.
